Luis Suarez Retires from International Football, Capping an Iconic Career
Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football, with his final appearance set to be against Paraguay in a World Cup qualifier.
At 37 years old, Suarez bids farewell to the international stage as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, having netted 69 goals in 142 caps. His emotional announcement saw him reflect on a storied career that began with his debut in 2007 against Colombia. “I believe this is the right time,” Suarez said, expressing his wish to savor his final match as much as he did his first.
Throughout his international career, Suarez participated in nine major tournaments, showcasing both brilliance and controversy. Notably, during the 2010 World Cup, he was infamous for handling the ball on the line, an act which led to a red card but ultimately helped Uruguay advance to the semifinals through a penalty shootout.
Suarez’s leadership was pivotal in Uruguay’s triumph at the 2011 Copa America, where he was a key figure and finished as the tournament’s second top scorer. Despite his contributions, his career was marred by incidents, including a four-month ban for biting an opponent during the 2014 World Cup, which saw him sidelined for the remainder of the tournament.
In addition to his World Cup appearances in 2018 and 2022, Suarez competed in five Copa America tournaments, demonstrating resilience and commitment despite various controversies.
Reflecting on his career, Suarez acknowledged the challenges he faced, including the fallout from the 2014 incident. “We went through difficult moments, many of them,” he said, “but I am proud of what I have achieved for Uruguayan football.”
Suarez’s retirement marks the end of a significant era for Uruguay, leaving behind a legacy as one of the nation’s most prolific and polarizing football figures.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially designated Morocco as the host for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League finals. The tournament will take place from November 9 to November 23, as announced on CAF’s official website.
Morocco previously hosted the last edition of this prestigious competition. Among the eight teams competing this year is Nigeria’s champions, Edo Queens. The current title holders are Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa.

Fenerbahce manager, Jose Mourinho, is reportedly planning a January transfer move for Barcelona forward Ansu Fati. After spending last season on loan at Brighton in the Premier League, Fati, now 21, returned to Barcelona but has struggled for game time under new coach Hansi Flick.
Once considered a potential successor to Lionel Messi, Fati’s limited opportunities at Barça have fueled speculation about a possible departure. According to *AS*, Mourinho is keen to bring the Spain international to the Turkish league, offering him the chance for regular football at Fenerbahce.
