Ajang Alfred Iliya, a member of the Labour Party (LP) in the House of Representatives, has explained that a leadership crisis within the party prompted his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abass, which was read during Tuesday’s plenary, Iliya, who represents Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, outlined several reasons for his move. He cited the Labour Party’s internal leadership struggles as a key factor, stating that while the decision was personal, it aligned with the best interests of his constituents and the broader national development agenda.
Iliya expressed his support for APC’s policies under President Bola Tinubu, particularly in areas like infrastructure, economic growth, and national unity. He also mentioned that the Labour Party’s limited influence in government had made it increasingly difficult to effectively represent his constituency’s needs.
By joining APC, Iliya believes he will be better positioned to secure federal support for crucial projects in Plateau State, such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, and contribute to a more unified and collaborative national governance approach. He emphasized that his decision was motivated by a desire to advance the needs of Plateau State and the country as a whole, not personal gain.
