Labour Party’s Vice Presidential Candidate in the 2023 election, **Datti Baba-Ahmed**, clarified that the party is undergoing a **transition**, not a crisis, despite recent media reports. Following the inaugural meeting of the Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee, Baba-Ahmed explained that the **caretaker committee** was necessary as the tenure of the **Julius Abure-led committee** had expired.
Baba-Ahmed, speaking on behalf of the former presidential candidate, **Peter Obi**, emphasized that the leadership change was **constitutional** and not driven by internal conflicts or political machinations. He also encouraged the former leadership, including Abure, to continue working with the party to rebuild its structure.
He firmly denied that Abia State Governor Alex Otti or Obi played any role in removing Abure, stating, “No governor unseated Abure; the constitution did.”
The Labour Party’s leadership transition comes as the party positions itself as a significant political force, having claimed a substantial voter base in the 2023 elections.
Senator Nenadi Usman, the Chairperson of the Caretaker Committee, also assured party members that her team was on a **rescue mission** to restore the party’s strength and make it a platform for Nigerians disillusioned with the current political climate. She pledged that the committee would work toward **reconciliation** and rebuilding the party within a short timeframe.
The Labour Party remains committed to serving as a viable alternative for Nigerians, according to Baba-Ahmed, and aims to continue growing despite challenges faced during this leadership transition.
