Julius Abure Challenges Alex Otti’s NEC Plan and Sets Up Disciplinary Committee to Address Party Discipline

-

The Labour Party (LP) is currently experiencing internal conflict, with significant disagreements over the convening of a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

Dispute Over NEC Meeting:
Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the LP, has criticized Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for planning to hold a NEC meeting on August 31, 2024. Otti’s intention to dissolve various executive councils within the party is based on claims that the tenure of the current executives has expired, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Abure’s Response:
Abure argues that the LP’s National Convention, which took place on March 27, 2024, was validated by a court on June 16, 2024. The court had ruled that the convention and issues related to party leadership and congresses were internal matters of the party, thereby upholding the legitimacy of the current executive structure.

Abure claims that any assertion of a leadership vacuum is intended to create disruption within the party. He also emphasized that party governance should be conducted through official channels rather than verbal claims, urging patience for formal communication from INEC.

Disciplinary Measures:
In response to the ongoing crisis, the LP has established a seven-member disciplinary committee to address and curb issues of non-compliance with the party’s constitution. The committee is chaired by Kehinde Edun, the National Legal Adviser, and includes other prominent party members such as Chief Clement Ojukwu, Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, Callistus Ihejiagwa, Alhaji Raji Mohammed, and Alhaji Umar Ibrahim.

Abure has called on all party members to abide by the LP constitution and respect its leadership, stressing that the national leadership will enforce discipline to maintain party integrity and unity.

Appeal for Unity:
Abure has also urged all factions within the party to cease hostilities and maintain the status quo until a final court decision is reached. He emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among party members to further the LP’s mission of supporting the downtrodden.
