At a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure on Thursday, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, issued a stern warning to INEC staff, emphasizing that any dereliction of duty during the upcoming Ondo State governorship election will have serious consequences.
Yakubu assured stakeholders of INEC’s preparations and reiterated the importance of collaboration with all involved parties to ensure a smooth election process. He also announced that INEC staff, including Electoral Officers from the state’s 18 Local Government Areas, will receive further briefings on Friday to reinforce their roles and responsibilities.
Addressing party agents, Yakubu urged political parties to prevent disruptive behavior among their supporters. INEC has taken additional steps to prevent impersonation and disputes, issuing accreditation tags for party agents with detailed identifiers, including names, photographs, deployment locations, and QR codes. Yakubu stressed that INEC-issued tags should be used exclusively, as the absence of proper identification in previous elections has caused unnecessary conflicts.
Additionally, Yakubu invited candidates to sign a Peace Accord on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 10:00 am, urging them to honor the Peace Committee’s call for a peaceful election.
