Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has spoken out in defense of Victor Osimhen, who has faced significant criticism during his recent transfer saga.
Osimhen, the Napoli striker, was at the center of a lengthy transfer process involving Napoli, Chelsea, and Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli. Despite expectations that he would depart Napoli this summer, a deal did not materialize before the transfer window closed.
Adding to the controversy, Osimhen has been omitted from Napoli’s squad list, with his number nine jersey reportedly given to new signing Romelu Lukaku.
In a post on X, Ighalo expressed his dismay at the criticism Osimhen has received. He noted that no one is perfect and criticized the negative remarks coming from his fellow countrymen without understanding the full situation.
“I spoke to him and could sense the pain in his voice, given the way he’s been treated,” Ighalo said. “This young man plays with heart and passion for his country. It’s disheartening to see the criticism he’s facing. He will come back stronger; we learn every day in life.”
Ighalo’s comments highlight the emotional toll of the transfer drama on Osimhen and advocate for a more empathetic perspective towards the player’s situation.
