Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has advised Nigerians to avoid reporting police misconduct on social media, urging them instead to utilize the Police Complaints Response Unit for structured and effective grievance resolution.
Speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference held in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, the IGP emphasized that addressing complaints through official channels ensures accuracy and accountability, while social media reports risk spreading misinformation.
“We appeal to the public not to use social media to report the conduct of police officers. The Police Complaints Response Unit is equipped to handle such issues professionally and transparently,” Egbetokun stated.
Egbetokun acknowledged the influence of social media on public perception but stressed the importance of verified information to prevent false narratives. He also reiterated the police force’s commitment to reforms aimed at building public trust through transparency and accountability.
The IGP praised the role of Police Public Relations Officers (PPROs) in fostering communication between the police and the public. He highlighted the ongoing reforms as part of a broader effort to enhance trust and respect for the force.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who opened the conference, lauded Egbetokun for his leadership and dedication to improving policing standards. He emphasized the need for effective communication in challenging regions like Delta and Lagos States, known for their complex security landscapes.
“Delta and Lagos are tough states to police. Any officer who has served in these states has the capability to handle Nigeria’s diverse security challenges,” Oborevwori remarked.
The conference reinforced the shared responsibility of the police, media, and public in addressing misinformation and promoting a positive image of the force. Both leaders called for continued collaboration to ensure safety, trust, and effective communication in Nigeria.
