Tensions ran high in Edo State as alleged political thugs disrupted the inspection of electoral materials from the recent governorship election. The inspection, scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was adjourned indefinitely after sporadic gunfire erupted near INEC’s state office, reportedly caused by clashes between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The violence occurred around the Ikpoba River, close to INEC’s head office, leaving several individuals injured with bullet wounds. The shooting forced INEC to suspend the inspection of the materials used in the September 21, 2024 election.
Earlier, the APC had raised objections to the inspection, insisting that it should begin with the voter register rather than the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Tensions escalated when the party submitted a petition accusing the Edo State Government of improperly transporting BVAS machines and voter registers to the INEC office. This claim was sternly contested by PDP representatives, who demanded the immediate start of the inspection, citing a court order.
Amid the disagreement and subsequent gunfire, INEC decided to postpone the inspection, citing security concerns. Both parties remain at odds, with APC representatives stating they would only resume participation once their petition is addressed.
The Labour Party’s state chairman, Kelly Ogbaloi, expressed concern over the chaotic atmosphere, calling for a level playing field and a more conducive environment for the exercise to take place.
