“Governor Sule Advocates Education and Collective Responsibility to Address Almajiri Crisis in the North”

-

Governor Abdullahi A. Sule of Nasarawa State has emphasized the urgent need for education as a solution to the challenges facing the North, particularly the Almajiri system. In a recent interview, he highlighted that without education and economic empowerment, the cycle of poverty and behavior associated with Almajiris will persist. Sule pointed out that the root of the problem lies in cultural and religious misunderstandings, stressing that no religion, including Islam, condones irresponsibility, such as having multiple wives and children without the means to support them.

Sule advocated for the education of the people, especially on responsible family planning and the proper understanding of Islamic teachings. He called on religious leaders and traditional rulers in the North to take a more active role in addressing these issues.

The governor also touched on the importance of agriculture as a means of empowerment, citing his own efforts in promoting agricultural development in Nasarawa State. However, he acknowledged that the problem of out-of-school children, which has escalated to over 18 million, needs more than just educational infrastructure. He noted that many Almajiri children are not from Nasarawa State but are brought in from other regions, often left to fend for themselves.

Sule proposed that instead of criminalizing parents, efforts should focus on educating them about their responsibilities. He emphasized that solving the Almajiri issue requires a collective effort from all stakeholders, including political leaders, traditional rulers, and the community. Without addressing the foundational issues, he warned that any temporary solutions would only be short-lived.

Governor Sule also called for self-reflection among northern leaders, acknowledging that the region’s problems stem from failures at various levels, including governance and community leadership. He urged everyone to take responsibility for their roles in these failures and work together towards sustainable solutions.
