Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has denied receiving any letter from the Martin Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly, which gave him a 48-hour ultimatum to present the 2025 budget. As the deadline expires on Wednesday, March 5, the state government, through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, stated in a letter to Speaker Martins Amaewhule that no such communication had reached the Governor’s office, Deputy Governor’s office, or the Accountant-General’s office.
Danagogo reiterated that Governor Fubara, in a state broadcast on Sunday, March 2, affirmed his commitment to obeying and implementing the Supreme Court’s decisions despite his personal views. He assured that the government had engaged its lawyers, who were still awaiting the certified true copy of the court’s judgments, and reaffirmed that the Governor would act accordingly once he received the documents.
Meanwhile, a prominent Niger Delta leader and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the 27 lawmakers in Rivers State against any move to impeach Governor Fubara. Speaking in a live Facebook broadcast, Dokubo, the Da-Amakiri Tubo and Amanyanabo of the Elem Kalabari Kingdom, cautioned that such an action could destabilize the state and trigger political unrest.
His warning follows the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the legitimacy of the 27 lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The ruling shifted the balance of power in the state’s legislature in favor of lawmakers loyal to Wike.
As the ultimatum nears its expiration, Rivers residents remain on edge, uncertain about the next political developments in the state.
