FG Pays N22bn Compensation for Displaced Zungeru Power Communities – Adelabu

-

The Federal Government has disbursed N22 billion as compensation to communities displaced by the 700-megawatt Zungeru hydroelectric power project in Niger State, according to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Adelabu shared the update during a meeting with the Compensation and Resettlement Committee in Abuja. He assured that an additional N2.2 billion would be released for communities yet to receive compensation, though he emphasized the need to verify claims from newly identified communities.

“At the project’s inception, 133 communities were slated for compensation, but the number has now exceeded 300. While we’ve paid N22 billion, we will verify the claims of newly added communities before releasing further funds,” Adelabu said.

Highlighting financial constraints, Adelabu noted the government is prioritizing resources amid competing demands. The Zungeru power project has faced legal challenges, including a court ruling last March mandating N1.1 trillion in compensation for displaced residents.

The Minister acknowledged the complexities of resettlement and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of affected communities.
