The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has pledged stringent action against individuals and entities violating building regulations, as it addresses the alarming rate of building collapses nationwide. At the 13th meeting of the National Council on Lands, Housing, and Urban Development in Gombe, Director Mohammed Bala highlighted ongoing efforts to curb these incidents. The five-day meeting, themed “Housing the Future: Affordable Housing for Economic Growth, Climate Resilience, and Urban Development,” emphasizes the government’s commitment to stricter building code enforcement.
Addressing reporters, Bala lamented the severe impact of building collapses on lives and property, citing incidents in Jos, Lagos, and Abuja in recent years. He attributed these to substandard materials, natural factors, and non-adherence to safety standards. To combat this, President Bola Tinubu and Housing Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa have initiated measures, including a tribunal for housing code violations and sessions to discuss building safety policies.
State Commissioner Usman emphasized that the council’s discussions align with Gombe State’s 2024 development agenda, focusing on affordable housing to drive economic growth and climate resilience.
