Edo Queens made an impressive start to their 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League campaign, defeating Ethiopian debutants CBE 3-0 in their opening Group B match on Sunday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Nigerian champions wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with Emem Peace opening the scoring just five minutes into the game. Despite a resilient defensive effort from CBE, Edo Queens went into the break with a slender 1-0 lead.
The second half saw Folashade Ijamilusi double their advantage in the 55th minute, and later, substitute Goodness Osigwe sealed the win with a third goal. The victory moved Edo Queens to the top of their group, ahead of Egyptian debutants Masar FC, who shocked defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a 1-0 win.
Edo Queens, champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and WAFU B, will next face Masar FC on Wednesday before meeting Mamelodi Sundowns on November 16. Their victory also earned them a guaranteed $150,000 participation fee, with higher rewards as they progress in the competition. The winner will take home $600,000, while the runner-up will receive $400,000.
