Tensions flared during a stakeholders meeting organized by INEC in Benin City, as Edo State PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun engaged in a heated exchange.
Aziegbemi accused the police of bias, stating that Edo State had been peaceful until the killing of a police officer, Onu Akor, at Benin Airport on July 18. He alleged that the situation worsened afterward, blaming the IGP for partisanship.
In response, IGP Egbetokun denied the allegations, asserting that the police’s focus is on uncovering the truth behind the officer’s death, adding that Aziegbemi’s view of bias would remain unchanged if rooted in this case.
