Davido Reacts to Threats of Show Cancellation Over Controversial Interview Comments

-

Award-winning music star Davido has responded to threats of having his upcoming December show in Lagos canceled due to his controversial remarks in a recent interview. The singer, who is set to perform on December 24th, took to Twitter (now known as X), expressing defiance, stating, “Dem say Dem go cancel my show cus of my interview. Lol I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”

The controversy stems from an interview in which Davido warned Black Americans not to relocate to Africa, describing the continent’s economy as “in shambles.” While he clarified that he wasn’t criticizing Africa as a whole, his remarks were met with backlash from some public figures, including former presidential aide Reno Omokri and TV presenter Akashat Nymat, who criticized Davido for allegedly disparaging his home country.

Despite the criticism, Davido remained unapologetic, asserting that his comments were truthful, and he positioned himself as a real ambassador for Nigeria. His comments sparked a debate on whether African celebrities should publicly critique the state of their countries, with some defending Davido’s honesty about the country’s challenges.

In response, Davido’s ally, Paulo Okoye, came to his defense, saying the singer was simply acknowledging the harsh realities of Nigeria’s current economic situation, which has seen global companies pull out and local businesses struggling.
