The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her sexual harassment allegation against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The suspension, recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, was announced on Thursday, March 6, 2024. As part of the sanction, the committee ruled that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s salary and security details would be withdrawn during the suspension period. Additionally, she has been barred from being seen anywhere around the National Assembly throughout the six months.
The controversy erupted after Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, formally accused Akpabio of misconduct in a petition submitted to the Senate. The Senate’s decision has since sparked discussions over parliamentary discipline, gender rights, and political power dynamics.
