Chelsea’s hopes of securing Nigerian striker Victor Boniface have dimmed as the player expressed a preference for playing in German and Spanish leagues, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Chelsea had been tipped to target Boniface, 23, for a big-money transfer in 2025, with some sources at Stamford Bridge viewing him as a more affordable alternative to Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. The Bayer Leverkusen star, who netted 21 goals and provided 10 assists last season, was expected to command a fee around £70m.
Despite his impressive form, Boniface made it clear in an interview with Sporty TV that he prefers German and Spanish football. “I’ve been saying it before I even came to Europe that I don’t really like the Premier League. I prefer German and Spanish football,” he said. “I’m not saying if a top team comes for me, I won’t go, but if you ask me the two countries I’d love to live and play in, it’s Germany and Spain.”
Chelsea have reportedly been scouting Boniface, but they are also considering alternatives such as Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres.
Boniface joined Leverkusen from Royale Union SG for €20m last season and has since become a key figure for the German club. His current value is estimated at €40m, with four years remaining on his contract.
