The Bauchi State Togetherness and Development Forum has expressed strong opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly, urging senators from the state to advocate for their immediate withdrawal.
The forum’s chairman, Abdullahi Koli, made the call during a conference on Wednesday at the National Commission for Museum and Monument, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Tomb, Bauchi. Koli specifically appealed to Bauchi’s senators—Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central), Shehu Buba (Bauchi South), and Ismail Dahuwa (Bauchi North)—to reject the bill in the Senate.
“We urgently convey the concerns of our people regarding the proposed Tax Reform Bills. At a time when Nigerians are already facing severe economic challenges, this legislation threatens to worsen their plight,” Koli said.
The forum criticized the government’s handling of the economic situation, especially following the removal of fuel subsidies, which they believe has exacerbated inflation and pushed many families deeper into poverty. Koli explained that many citizens, particularly in Bauchi, can no longer afford essential services like food, healthcare, and education.
Additionally, the group voiced its discontent with the government’s existing tax burdens, including higher electricity tariffs and increased transfer fees, which they argue have already placed immense strain on citizens.
The forum also raised concerns about the quick passage of the Tax Reform Bill, noting that hastily passed legislation can lead to unintended negative consequences. Koli cited the 2024 Appropriation Bill, which reportedly included inflated expenditures that were later exposed, as an example of the risks posed by rushed bills.
The group called for a more cautious and responsible approach to addressing Nigeria’s revenue challenges, suggesting that reducing unnecessary government spending would be a more effective solution.
