AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Eguavoen Discusses Return to Super Eagles

-

Augustine Eguavoen has shed light on his decision to return as head coach of the Super Eagles for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. This marks Eguavoen’s fourth tenure with the Nigerian national team.

The 59-year-old, who is also the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), explained that his appointment was not the result of any lobbying or personal application. Instead, he views it as a natural extension of his responsibilities within the Federation.

Eguavoen emphasized, “I am a member of the Federation, working as the Technical Director of the Nigerian Football Federation. When situations like this arise and you are called upon, you can’t say no. It is a task I have performed before, and it falls under my responsibility.”

He further clarified that his return to the role was not a result of any personal effort to seek the position. “For the fact that the hierarchy of the Federation now feels and thinks that I can salvage the situation, why not? But one thing should be clear to the public: I didn’t ask for this, I didn’t lobby for this, I didn’t apply for this. It is God’s favour.”

Eguavoen’s commitment and willingness to step in during a critical time for the Super Eagles underscore his dedication to Nigerian football and his readiness to support the team’s success in the upcoming qualifiers.
