A tragic incident unfolded as a female student at the University of Ilorin reportedly took her own life after losing N500,000 to an online lover she had met on Snapchat.

The 20-year-old student, identified as Sanni Hameedat, was enrolled in the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Hameedat had entrusted her mother’s N500,000 to an individual she met on the internet, believing him to be genuine. However, this online acquaintance turned out to be a scammer.

In an attempt to repay the money to her mother, Hameedat resorted to borrowing from lending app agents, which added to her financial burden.

The school administration confirmed this devastating situation and revealed that the student’s suicide was linked to financial distress. Her inability to repay the borrowed money led to depression, ultimately resulting in her tragic decision to end her life.

The statement from the school said, “The cause of suicide was traced to financial misappropriation. She was entrusted with a significant sum of money by her mother. She crossed paths with a guy on Snapchat and developed a friendship.”

When the young man claimed his mother needed N500,000 urgently for her breast cancer treatment, Hameedat, out of compassion and emotional connection, lent him half of the N1 million she had set aside for her mother. The boy promised to repay the borrowed amount.

“However, when her mother needed the money back, the boy abruptly cut off all contact, blocking her. This left her deeply troubled, and in an effort to make up the missing N500,000, she resorted to borrowing money from various apps.”
