Hajia Nike AbdulRahman, National Convener of Women Advocacy for Good Governance, has condemned the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing it as a violation of justice and fair hearing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate following her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement on Saturday in Akure, AbdulRahman warned that the Senate’s decision sets a dangerous precedent for women speaking out against abuse and misconduct.
“The swift suspension of Akpoti-Uduaghan raises serious concerns about the Senate’s commitment to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of its members,” she said.
She further urged the Senate to reinstate Akpoti-Uduaghan to allow her to represent her constituents without fear of retribution, calling it not just a matter of justice but a fundamental right of the Kogi Central Senatorial Zone.
AbdulRahman also demanded an independent investigation into the allegations, insisting that Akpabio step aside to ensure transparency.
She emphasized the need for the Senate to implement stronger policies to protect individuals who report misconduct, stressing that all allegations should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.
As Nigeria marks International Women’s Day, AbdulRahman called on civil society organizations to support survivors of sexual harassment and push for systemic reforms that protect their rights and dignity.
“We urge the Senate to act decisively and restore faith in our democratic institutions. Together, we can build a governance system that is accountable, just, and equitable for all,” she concluded.
