Nigerian music sensation Tiwa Savage has opened up about her divorce from ex-husband Tunji Balogun, popularly known as TeeBillz.
Speaking on The Receipts Podcast, Tiwa clarified that she was not responsible for the split, revealing that TeeBillz publicly announced their divorce in 2018 while she was battling postpartum depression.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Tiwa said, “He announced it online. I did not break up with him, but I was the one being attacked. My baby was just a few months old, and I was struggling with postpartum and depression. Yet, the public blamed me, saying it was my fault as a woman to keep the house together.”
The singer added that the intense criticism and public shaming left her deeply hurt and led to a transformative period in her life. “It made me depressed and angry for so long. Then I became the ‘African Bad Girl,’” she shared, referencing her bold, new image.
Tiwa also revealed that the experience shaped her decision to refrain from discussing the relationship publicly, calling it an “eye-opener.”
Fans and supporters have commended her for speaking out, highlighting the need for sensitivity around issues of mental health and societal pressures on women.
