Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has urged Nigerians to prioritize the credibility of presidential candidates rather than focusing on regional zoning ahead of the 2027 election. Shekarau, speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, emphasized the importance of selecting the most qualified and trustworthy candidates for the nation’s leadership.
As debates continue about whether power should return to the northern part of Nigeria in 2027, Shekarau made it clear that the focus should not be on regions but on the quality of the candidates presented by political parties. He acknowledged ongoing discussions surrounding the southern region, which currently holds the presidency with Bola Tinubu, but maintained that the priority must be on the credibility and capabilities of the candidates.
Shekarau stressed that all political parties should ensure they nominate strong, qualified individuals for the presidency. “Our challenge is that all the parties should give Nigerians the correct candidates so we have the best to choose from,” he stated. He further remarked that, if forced to choose among undesirable options, Nigerians would have to pick the least harmful choice, underscoring the importance of offering voters credible candidates.
