Police Demolish Ibom Youth Council Headquarters, Arrest Three Suspects

-

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has demolished the headquarters of the Ibom Youth Council (IYC) in Ikot Isighe, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, following its proscription by Governor Umo Eno.

In a statement on Thursday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Timfon John, confirmed that a joint security team acted on credible intelligence to locate and dismantle the building, which had served as the operational base of the group. Upon arrival, members of IYC fled, and three suspects were arrested.

The police statement revealed that the group had been involved in procuring arms, training for military-style attacks, and committing various infractions, including assaults on security formations and private property. The group had reportedly planned to escalate disruptions in Akwa Ibom toward the end of 2024 and into the new year.

The state government, with full backing from the security agencies, has vowed to take all necessary legal measures to ensure the continued peace and stability of Akwa Ibom. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could threaten public peace.

In addition, the police warned landlords to be cautious when leasing properties to individuals or groups involved in criminal activities, stating that any property used for subversive acts would be demolished, and the property owners could face charges as accomplices.
