Ademola Lookman, the 27-year-old winger, has described his decision to represent Nigeria as a pivotal and rewarding moment in his career.
Born in Wandsworth, Greater London, to Nigerian parents, Lookman initially played for England at the youth level, helping the young Three Lions win the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2017. However, he made the switch to the Super Eagles in February 2022.
Lookman made his Nigerian debut in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ghana and later participated in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire, where he had an impressive campaign. He scored three goals, provided one assist in seven appearances, and earned a spot in the Team of the Tournament.
Reflecting on his journey, Lookman said:
“It was massive for me because that was really a big turning point in my career. Ever since I’ve put on the Super Eagles jersey, it has been fruitful.”
He praised the team’s unity and potential for growth, adding:
“The togetherness of the team is something very special. At the last AFCON, we reached the final but unfortunately came up a bit short.”
Lookman, who previously played for Leicester City, remains an integral part of Nigeria’s football future as the team continues to build on its recent successes.
