The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) for repeatedly postponing the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting amid the party’s internal crisis.
At an emergency meeting on Thursday, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara expressed concerns over the delays, warning that they undermine party unity and trust. He emphasized the NEC’s importance in addressing pressing issues and called for adherence to the February 2025 timeline for the next meeting.
Wabara also announced that the BoT would renew peace efforts in January by meeting with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.
The PDP has faced growing internal divisions since Damagum became acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal. Delays in convening NEC meetings have fueled calls for Damagum’s resignation.
In response, former National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan commended the BoT’s intervention, labeling it “timely and patriotic.” He supported the recommendation for the North Central Zone to nominate a permanent replacement for Ayu.
Wabara called for unity and urged the PDP to focus on offering credible alternatives to the current administration’s economic policies, which he described as exacerbating hardship for Nigerians.
“The BoT remains committed to restoring peace and unity within the PDP, prioritizing dialogue and collaboration to rebuild the party,” Wabara added.
