The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank of undermining Nigeria’s public education system. The union’s President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, made the claim during ASUU’s Heroes Day event in Abuja, expressing concern over the ongoing challenges faced by public universities.
ASUU highlighted the failure to renegotiate the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government, despite several Memoranda of Understanding. The union also criticized the implementation of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), which it believes is harming the operations of universities, even after promises to remove it.
Osodeke also noted that the Federal Government is withholding unpaid salaries and allowances for ASUU members. He emphasized the union’s determination to fight for the future of Nigerian public universities, mentioning the granting of PhD scholarships to deserving members as part of the ongoing efforts.
In addition, Osodeke expressed solidarity with ASUU members at Kogi, Lagos, Ebonyi, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University for their continued advocacy for university reforms.
The Heroes Day event also honored individuals for their contributions to the advancement of public university education in Nigeria.
