Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended after a video allegedly surfaced showing him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and its former manager, Jürgen Klopp. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced that Coote’s suspension is immediate and will remain effective until the conclusion of a full investigation.
Coote, who has been a Premier League referee since 2018, recently officiated Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa. The unverified video reportedly references a Liverpool-Burnley match from 2020, where Klopp criticized Coote for not penalizing fouls against Liverpool players.
PGMOL has declined further comment until the investigation is complete. Football analyst Fabrizio Romano confirmed the suspension on his social media, writing, “Official: PL referee David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation.”
The incident has sparked discussions within the football community regarding referee impartiality and professional conduct.
