As Nigeria approaches its 64th Independence Day, the Federal Government has commended the country’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, crediting it as a testament to the Nigerian people’s will to uphold freedom and liberty for future generations.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, hailed Nigeria’s journey since independence, citing the nation’s resilience and progress. He praised Nigeria’s evolution into a leading force in Africa and a respected voice globally.
“This is a time of reflection, celebration, and renewed hope as we honour Nigeria’s journey. Our unbroken democracy for 25 years stands as a testament to the will of Nigerians to sustain freedom and liberty,” Idris said.
The minister highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its reforms aimed at revitalizing the economy. Among the key achievements noted were local government autonomy, economic reforms like the removal of the petroleum subsidy, the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and macroeconomic stability.
Idris also mentioned the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund under the Student Loans Act of 2024, which aims to make tertiary education more accessible to young Nigerians.
Insecurity and inflation were discussed, with the government highlighting progress in both areas while supporting small businesses through grants and financial incentives.
The press briefing, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, marked the start of a series of events leading up to the Independence Day celebration on October 1, 2024.
Akume listed Tinubu’s significant accomplishments, such as the Presidential CNG Initiative, the launch of hybrid CNG-powered buses, and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s economy by empowering SMEs. Additionally, the government’s response to flooding and the disbursement of N2.5 billion through the Nigerian Students Loan Fund were also noted.
Akume concluded by reassuring Nigerians of the government’s commitment to improving the economic situation and creating new opportunities in the short, medium, and long terms.
