In a tragic incident on Sunday, four police officers lost their lives after gunmen ambushed a checkpoint at Four Corner Junction in Ozalla, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the attack. However, sources from the community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the officers were conducting a stop-and-search operation when the gunmen opened fire.
A video circulating on social media reveals the lifeless body of one officer in uniform lying on the expressway, with a nearby police patrol vehicle set ablaze.
Frank Nweke Junior, a former Information Minister and the 2023 All Progressives Grand Alliance governorship candidate, condemned the attack via his X (formerly Twitter) account. He stated, “Earlier today (Sunday), the Ozalla community in Nkanu West LGA, Enugu, faced a horrific attack by so-called unknown gunmen who targeted policemen stationed at the Four Corner Junction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.”
Nweke extended his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and the Enugu Police Command, emphasizing that such brutality against those tasked with safeguarding the public is intolerable.
