The widow of the late Afrobeats musician, Mohbad, appeared before a coroner’s inquest in Lagos to provide her testimony, shedding light on the singer’s final moments and the events that transpired at the Ikorodu concert.
Wunmi, the widow of Mohbad, testified on Tuesday as part of the coroner’s inquest seeking to determine the circumstances of the singer’s death.
During her testimony, she disclosed that Mohbad had started experiencing discomfort after a nurse administered an injection in his room.
“After the nurse injected him, he mentioned that he felt uncomfortable. The nurse arrived at around 1:00 pm on Tuesday, and by that time, his hand had begun to swell,” Wunmi explained.
She revealed that the singer had sustained an injury due to a fight with his close friend, Primeboy, on Sunday night, September 10, at Ikorodu Town Hall. Because the injury was initially minor, Mohbad had chosen not to seek medical attention.
According to Mohbad’s widow, the singer arrived at the Ikorodu concert at approximately 7:00 pm on September 10, 2023, and performed around 9:00 pm. However, as they attempted to leave the venue, a large crowd of fans had gathered, making it difficult to find a clear path.
Wunmi recounted, “He (Mohbad) wanted to leave after his performance, but the exit was blocked. He instructed his friend Prime Boy to inform his brother, Adura Aloba, to inform the bouncer that their car needed to leave. However, they were told to wait until another artist finished performing.”
“It was Prime Boy who came back complaining, asking why Mohbad’s brother was being disrespectful, saying that Mohbad should intervene. But Mohbad stated that he couldn’t discipline his brother in public. At that point, Mohbad was genuinely upset because of the delays and everything that was transpiring.”
During the ongoing argument between Primeboy and Mohbad, Wunmi mentioned that she was sitting between them. This led Mohbad to exit the car and confront Primeboy on the other side during the altercation.
“I was in the middle, and my husband got out of the car because he was upset that Prime Boy was calling him ‘Promise,’ which he didn’t appreciate being called in public,” Wunmi testified.
She further stated that, as the fight ensued, she quickly called the individuals in their second Prado jeep to intervene and settle the dispute. However, she remained unaware of the details of the altercation because she couldn’t see everything from her vantage point.
