Burkina Faso has introduced a new biometric passport that omits the logo of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), signaling a firm departure from the regional organization.
This development follows Burkina Faso’s decision, alongside Niger and Mali, to cut ties with ECOWAS after military coups in these countries. The new passport, which does not feature any ECOWAS symbols, was announced by Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, on Tuesday.
Sana explained, “This passport does not display the ECOWAS logo or any reference to the organization. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from ECOWAS, and this passport reflects that decision.”
The severance of relations came after ECOWAS imposed sanctions in response to the military takeovers in these nations. Although the sanctions were limited to suspension, ECOWAS has insisted that the countries return to democratic governance before lifting the measures.
Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, has rejected the prospect of rejoining, accusing ECOWAS of deviating from its foundational pan-African principles.
Despite its exit, Burkina Faso’s passport maintains a strong global ranking at 78th and offers visa-free access to 60 destinations, including some current ECOWAS member states, as noted by the Henley Passport Index.
ECOWAS has raised concerns that the withdrawal of these countries could impact the free movement of people and goods within the region, affecting its 400 million citizens. President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, who currently chairs ECOWAS, is actively seeking to persuade the nations to reconsider their departure, emphasizing the organization’s willingness to uphold friendly relations.
