Rivers LG Poll: Niger Delta Youths Advocate for Peaceful Elections

-

The South-South Youths Initiative (SSYI) has urged for a peaceful local government election in Rivers State, scheduled for October 5, 2024. The group, led by its National President, Imeabe Oscar, called on political parties and citizens to maintain peace during the election period.

In a statement on Friday, Oscar highlighted the need for Governor Siminialayi Fubara to provide operational vehicles for the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to help ensure security during the election. He stressed that effective security measures would promote a smooth election process.

“We urge all parties to conduct themselves peacefully and allow the elections to proceed without incident,” Oscar said. He also emphasized that good governance begins at the grassroots level, urging elected officials to focus on development rather than political struggles.

Oscar expressed concerns about the current state of politics in Rivers, noting that it has hindered the state’s economic progress compared to others, like Lagos. He urged the governor to prioritize governance and focus on using the state’s resources for development.

He criticized the performance of outgoing caretaker committee chairmen, accusing them of neglecting their duties to the grassroots and focusing instead on personal gains. Oscar advised that new candidates should prioritize the well-being of their councils and not merely seek to control resources.

In conclusion, Oscar called on all stakeholders in the state to unite and work together for the peace and progress of Rivers, urging them to support efforts that will drive economic growth and improve the state’s standing.
