ABUJA, Nigeria — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the urgent deployment of counter-terrorism units, tactical squads, and surveillance drones to Plateau State, in response to the wave of coordinated attacks that began on March 28, 2025.
In a statement released Wednesday by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the police described the move as part of a strategic effort to contain the violence and restore stability in the region.
“This decisive action underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to restore peace, ensure the safety and security of all residents, and bring perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice,” the statement read.
To lead the operations, the IGP has appointed Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, who is in charge of Operations. DIG Yakubu visited Plateau on Tuesday, April 8, where he met with Governor Caleb Mutfwang to assess the situation and express condolences to grieving communities.
The deployment includes personnel from the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force units, drones for real-time aerial surveillance, Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), tactical response teams, and police helicopters. These resources are being concentrated in Bokkos Local Government Area and other high-risk communities that have suffered repeated and deadly attacks.
The recent violence in Plateau State has claimed dozens of lives and left many injured, triggering widespread fear and displacement. Authorities say the coordinated nature of the assaults indicates a deeper security challenge.
During his visit, DIG Yakubu engaged with state officials and local leaders to discuss sustainable security strategies and address the underlying causes of the conflict. He emphasized that efforts are aimed not only at responding to the violence but also at preventing future attacks.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Plateau State Government, local communities, and other security agencies to ensure enduring peace.
Residents were urged to support security operations by remaining alert and sharing credible information with law enforcement.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not relent in its duty to protect lives and property. We are committed to restoring normalcy and justice in Plateau State,” IGP Egbetokun assured.
