The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Governor Monday Okpebholo of mismanaging over ₦30 billion left in the state’s treasury by former Governor Godwin Obaseki, just two weeks into his administration.
Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, PDP’s caretaker committee chairman, made the allegations during a press conference titled “State of the Nation Address.” He claimed the funds were used to reward political allies and godfathers who supported Okpebholo’s campaign during the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
Key Allegations by PDP:
– Non-Payment of Salaries: PDP accused the APC-led government of failing to pay November salaries to public workers, deviating from Obaseki’s record of salary payments by the 25th of every month.
– Extravagant Spending: The government allegedly procured over ₦5 billion worth of vehicles without following due procurement processes.
– Inauguration Costs: PDP claimed the administration was attempting to justify over ₦2 billion in inauguration expenses.
Aziegbemi also warned that the state’s procurement laws were under threat and criticized the alleged actions as a betrayal of public trust.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration dismissed the allegations as baseless. In a statement by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, the government described the accusations as an attempt to distract from its development agenda.
Itua stated, “Governor Monday Okpebholo is determined to expose the eight-year rot of the PDP and recover Edo’s commonwealth.” He added that the administration is committed to rapidly advancing the state’s development and fulfilling campaign promises.
The accusations have heightened political tension in Edo State as the APC and PDP continue to exchange blame over governance and public accountability.
