The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results for the 2024 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), revealing that 60.55% of the 828,284 candidates passed with five credits, including English and Mathematics. This marks a decline from the 61.60% pass rate in 2023.
Overall, 1,147,597 candidates, or 83.90%, passed with five credits regardless of English and Mathematics, down from 84.68% the previous year.
At a press conference in Minna, NECO Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Wushishi, stated that 1,376,423 candidates registered for the examinations, with 1,367,736—comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females—actually sitting for the tests conducted from June 19 to August 19, 2024. The results were released 55 days after the last paper was completed.
Wushishi also addressed concerns regarding examination malpractice, revealing that 40 schools were invited for discussions related to various forms of cheating across 17 states. Furthermore, 21 supervisors faced recommendations for blacklisting due to poor supervision and misconduct.
One school in Ekiti State has been recommended for derecognition due to mass cheating in core subjects. Notably, the number of candidates involved in malpractice decreased from 22,030 in 2023 to 8,437 in the recent examinations.
