Afrobeats musician and producer Maleek Berry has shared intriguing details about his early interactions with Davido, revealing that the superstar pretended to be less affluent than he was during their time as up-and-coming artists.
In a recent appearance on the ‘90s Baby’ podcast, Berry recounted how he and Davido worked together in the studio when Davido was still building his career. Despite Davido’s background in a wealthy family, Berry claimed that Davido acted as if he were from modest means while they worked together in London.
Berry shared, “I was there when Davido only had four thousand YouTube views. When he came to London, I would take him to the studio in Bermondsey and record him. It was one of his cousins who connected us via social media. He wasn’t even known then. We were just two Nigerian guys who loved music that got connected.”
He continued, “He acted around us like one of those poor kids. But when I pulled up to his dad’s crib, I was surprised. There’s money and there’s money! I was just so taken aback because at the time, my mind didn’t used to move like he [Davido] had money. He used to blend in with us. When I saw the tower, I was like, okay, they’re rich.”
Berry’s comments highlight the contrast between Davido’s public persona during his early career and his actual background. The revelation provides insight into how Davido navigated his rise to fame while maintaining a relatable image.
In addition to this, Berry revealed that Davido was instrumental in connecting him with fellow artist Wizkid, further showcasing the supportive network that exists among Nigerian musicians.
