Sandra Victor-Gwafan, co-founder and CEO of DeBranch Farmers, has urged farmers and store owners to stop drying grains on bare ground and to maintain clean storage facilities to prevent the spread of Lassa fever. She emphasized that such practices attract rodents, which are primary carriers of the virus.
Victor-Gwafan highlighted the importance of using tightly sealed containers for storing food, drying grains on clean surfaces, and regularly cleaning storage areas to deter rodents. She also stressed the need for broader awareness campaigns involving private and government organizations, as well as faith-based groups, to educate communities on preventive measures.
In addition to proper food storage, she advised maintaining good hygiene practices, such as keeping environments clean, covering food, washing hands regularly, and seeking medical attention promptly when symptoms arise.
These recommendations come amid a significant outbreak of Lassa fever in Nigeria, with 118 deaths reported in the first quarter of 2025.
