The Federal Government has mandated electricity distribution companies (Discos) to replace weak distribution networks in their franchise areas within seven days.
This directive was issued through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) and comes after a two-month notice previously given to the Discos to implement necessary upgrades.
NEMSA’s Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Tukur Aliyu, disclosed this information to journalists on Monday during the 2024 Customer Service Week celebration in Abuja. He explained that many distribution networks were found to be old and weak, prompting the directive for upgrades to ensure safe electricity distribution across the country.
Following a recent electrocution incident in Calabar, NEMSA ordered the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company to enhance its network in the Cross River State capital. However, Aliyu expressed dissatisfaction with the utility’s efforts after two inspection visits, stating, “We were there twice to ensure that what we asked them to do was done, but we were surprised that they had not completed the work, leading us to issue an enforcement notice.”
Upon reviewing the networks nationwide, NEMSA discovered similar deficiencies and issued enforcement directives to all utility companies in the country. Aliyu emphasized, “They were given two months to ensure that the areas mentioned in the directives were effectively addressed.”
With the two-month deadline nearing its end, he noted that NEMSA officers are on the ground and ready to monitor compliance.
Aliyu also highlighted the purpose of Customer Service Week as a means to celebrate teamwork and the commitment of all staff, emphasizing the importance of exceeding customer expectations in service delivery.
He urged electricity consumers to hire certified electricians for their installations, which will enable traceability in case of safety issues. “To mitigate hazards effectively, we have technical standards that must be enforced. Ensuring that your electric installation is done by certified personnel is crucial,” he stated.
At the event, the National Coordinator of SERVICOM, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli, emphasized the significance of boosting morale and teamwork, pointing out that the 2024 theme, “Above and Beyond,” stresses the importance of exceeding expectations in all aspects of service.
