The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday criticized President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of making misleading claims about his administration’s achievements in his Independence Day speech. The opposition claimed Tinubu’s address highlighted the ruling All Progressives Congress’ (APC) disregard for the hardships Nigerians are currently facing.
In response, the APC dismissed the PDP’s criticism as an attempt to remain relevant. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, condemned the speech, calling it a “complete waste of time” and arguing it failed to address the nation’s pressing economic and security crises.
During his national broadcast, Tinubu stressed the importance of reforms, warning that continuing with the status quo could result in national collapse. He highlighted his administration’s successes, including attracting over $30 billion in foreign direct investment in the past year.
However, the PDP rebuked Tinubu’s claims, asserting that his administration was disconnected from the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, who continue to face economic hardship, unemployment, and rising poverty. The PDP further criticized the government’s handling of key issues, such as fuel price hikes and unemployment, and urged Tinubu to engage directly with citizens to better understand their plight.
Reacting to the PDP’s comments, APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, stated that the opposition party’s frustrations stem from the APC’s achievements, accusing the PDP of ignoring improvements made under Tinubu’s leadership. He emphasized that peace and stability had returned to Abuja since the APC took power, contrasting this with the turmoil during the PDP’s rule.
