Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha and 2023 presidential candidate for the Action Alliance, has firmly denounced the idea of a military coup in Nigeria. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Al-Mustapha emphasized that military takeovers are outdated and have no place in modern Nigeria.
Addressing the current difficulties faced by citizens due to the federal government’s removal of the fuel subsidy, Al-Mustapha criticized the calls for a military intervention as misguided. He asserted that Nigeria’s future lies in strengthening its democratic processes rather than reverting to past practices.
Al-Mustapha highlighted the importance of selecting a governance system tailored to Nigeria’s unique context rather than imitating those of countries like the United States or the United Kingdom. He advocated for a democracy that reflects Nigeria’s own historical and cultural background.
Expressing his commitment to democratic principles, Al-Mustapha urged those calling for a coup to focus their efforts on supporting democratic institutions and military professionalism. He stressed that military rule is no longer appropriate and that efforts should be directed towards enhancing the nation’s democratic framework.
