Akpabio: Critics of Tax Reform Bills Lack Understanding

-

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that much of the controversy surrounding the proposed tax reform bills stems from a lack of understanding among their critics.

Speaking on Wednesday during the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by President Bola Tinubu to the joint session of the National Assembly, Akpabio highlighted that the four key tax reform bills – the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria Establishment Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, and Nigeria Tax Bill – represent a significant shift in Nigeria’s fiscal policies.

The bills have faced criticism, particularly from some northern groups who fear that the reforms might negatively impact their region. However, Akpabio praised the initiative, asserting, “It is disheartening that those who have not taken the time to understand these bills are the loudest critics.”

He urged Nigerians, especially public officials, to engage with the reforms carefully, emphasizing that this initiative is the first major tax overhaul in Nigeria’s history. Akpabio added that the reforms would not only enhance the country’s revenue but also create a more competitive business environment, ultimately benefiting small and medium enterprises and improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
