8 killed, scores injured after IED explosion along Maiduguri-Damboa highway

-

An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion along the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu federal road in Borno State resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, including a driver and seven passengers. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near Gidan Kaji (Poultry House) in Konduga Local Government Area, a location that has been deserted for over a decade due to Boko Haram activities.

The convoy, comprising private and commercial vehicles, was under military escort from Damboa to Maiduguri when the explosion took place. The District Head of Damboa, Lawan Maina, confirmed that the injured have been evacuated to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri, where Governor Babagana Zulum has directed that they receive free medical treatment.

This tragic event has intensified concerns about the security situation in Borno State. Former Commissioner of Trade, Commerce, and Industry, Hon. Yerima Lawan Kareto, criticized the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, for claiming that Borno is safe. Kareto invited the minister to personally visit affected areas like Damasak to witness the security challenges firsthand.

The explosion underscores the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram in the region and the need for enhanced security measures to protect civilians.
