Men with large breasts at higher risk of breast cancer – Expert

-

Dr. Uche Nwokwu, Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has highlighted that men with enlarged breasts—often due to gynecomastia—face a higher risk of developing breast cancer. This increased risk is attributed to hormonal imbalances, particularly when estrogen levels become dominant over testosterone, leading to the proliferation of breast tissue.

Dr. Nwokwu explained that while breast cancer in men is rare, it does occur and is often underdiagnosed due to a lack of awareness. He emphasized that men undergoing hormone therapy to feminize their bodies are also at elevated risk, as such treatments can disrupt the hormonal balance and promote breast tissue growth.

Genetic factors also play a significant role; individuals with a family history of breast cancer should be particularly vigilant. Dr. Nwokwu advised men to regularly check for lumps or abnormalities in their breast tissue and seek medical attention promptly if any changes are noticed. He also noted that the Federal Government has designated cancer as a reportable disease to improve data collection and enhance diagnostic capabilities nationwide.
