ENUGU — The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has issued a 5MW power generation license to Tempo Power Solutions Ltd for the establishment of a gas-fired plant, marking another major step in the state’s push to expand electricity access and attract private investment in the energy sector.
This latest approval brings the total licensed generation capacity under EERC to 15MW since it took over regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on October 22, 2024. Enugu remains the first state in Nigeria to successfully complete the transfer of power sector regulation to a state-level authority.
Speaking at the license presentation ceremony held at the EERC headquarters on Thursday, the agency’s Chairman and CEO, Chijioke Okonkwo, described the development as a testament to growing investor confidence in Enugu’s energy sector.
“Tempo Power swiftly took advantage of the conducive investment environment created by Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. Their model of proactive engagement and strategic partnership sets a new standard for others to follow,” Okonkwo stated.
He noted that the EERC has so far issued interim distribution and generation licenses, including a 10MW generation license to Fedikore Limited and a distribution license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Ltd. In addition, more than 60 customer complaints have been successfully resolved, while four new license applications across generation, distribution, and retail are currently under review.
The EERC boss credited the progress to the Enugu State Electricity Policy and Law, both introduced in 2023, which he said laid a strong foundation for private sector participation and a reliable regulatory framework.
Okonkwo further urged other energy developers to seize the opportunities available in the state. “Enugu State is open for energy business. The transformation in infrastructure, security, and socio-economic conditions has made it easier and more attractive for investors.”
He added that these improvements would also support electricity delivery to underserved and unserved areas, contributing to broader economic growth.
Tempo Power’s Executive Director, Mr Collins Kalabare, expressed gratitude to the EERC and Governor Mbah for fostering a transparent and efficient regulatory environment. He commended the Commission for ensuring a seamless, merit-based application process, noting that investors did not need political connections to succeed.
“EERC operates professionally and transparently. We didn’t need to know anybody. The process is simple and business-minded,” Kalabare said.
He also affirmed Tempo Power’s readiness to deliver reliable and cost-reflective electricity services tailored to support both commercial and residential needs in Enugu.
“We will provide uninterrupted power supply that adds value to businesses and improves the lives of residents. Our goal aligns with that of the state — to grow Enugu’s economy and create a better life for all,” he added.
The milestone is another step in Governor Mbah’s drive to position Enugu as a leading subnational hub for energy investment and sustainable development.
