Japan Strengthens Trade Ties with Nigeria at Lagos International Trade Fair

-

Japan has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening trade relations with Nigeria, following its participation in the recently concluded Lagos International Trade Fair. Tokashi Oku, Managing Director and Trade Commissioner for the Japanese External Trade Organisation, expressed optimism about the future of bilateral trade, despite the lower-than-expected turnout at the event.

At the closing ceremony, Oku acknowledged that the economic challenges facing Nigeria this year led to a decrease in the number of participants, but emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties. He noted that despite fewer visitors, Japanese companies had productive discussions and successfully signed important contracts with Nigerian firms.

“Even though the number of visitors is decreasing, I believe some business discussions and prominent contracts are steady,” Oku said. He also highlighted the potential for increased engagement at future trade events, expressing confidence that the 2025 trade fair would see a stronger turnout.

Looking ahead, Oku revealed that Nigeria had confirmed its participation in the Japan Expo, scheduled for April 2025, which further solidifies the growing partnership between the two nations. He emphasized Nigeria’s key role in global trade and looked forward to greater cooperation in the coming year.
