As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day on October 1st, veteran actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has made a powerful statement against the ongoing trend of “japa,” or leaving the country for better opportunities abroad. Taking to Instagram, she shared her appreciation for the resilience of Nigerians and declared her commitment to staying in her homeland.

In her heartfelt message, Funke praised her fellow Nigerians for their perseverance during these challenging times, expressing her firm belief in Nigeria’s potential for greatness. “I am not going to japa,” she stated, emphasizing that she will not abandon the country, especially when it has provided her with numerous opportunities.

Highlighting her achievements in Nigeria, Funke noted her ability to empower youth and her success in producing films with large crews—over 175 members for one project alone. She proudly reflected on the impact of her work, including the successful release of her films.

On Instagram, she wrote, “Happy Independence Day to my beloved Nigeria! We’ve weathered storms, but our spirit remains unbroken. I celebrate our resilience, creativity, and hope. Envisioning a Nigeria where dreams flourish, talents thrive, and opportunities abound. Let’s believe in a brighter tomorrow.”

In the spirit of giving back, Funke also reached out to the less privileged on this special day, distributing food items to residents in Somolu, Yaba, Mushin, and surrounding areas in Lagos. She plans to continue her charitable efforts through her movie *Everybody Loves Jenifa*, demonstrating her commitment to kindness and support for her community.
