Former senator Shehu Sani has proposed that individuals who collect their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) but fail to vote in elections should face a heavy fine. Sani made the suggestion in a social media post, highlighting the issue of low voter turnout in Nigerian elections.
In the 2023 presidential election, only 24.9 million out of 93.47 million registered voters participated, resulting in the lowest voter turnout in Nigeria’s history. Sani believes that imposing fines on PVC holders who do not vote would incentivize greater participation in future elections.
