The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rebutted former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s claim that the party is irrelevant, branding him as a “failed and inconsequential politician.”
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in 2023, made the remarks during the inauguration of a renovated party office in Katsina State on Saturday, asserting that the PDP’s significance had diminished since his departure from the party.
In a statement issued on Sunday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba criticized Kwankwaso’s statements, suggesting that his claims stem from selfishness and a lack of genuine leadership. The statement read:
“Our response to Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s comments is that he remains insignificant in Nigerian politics today, as evidenced by his struggle to lead a party with control over only one state. It is inconceivable that someone with such limited political influence would declare that a party with 13 governors, numerous Senators, House of Representatives members, and a strong presence across all local government areas and wards is dead.”
The PDP also accused Kwankwaso of insensitivity and noted that his past achievements were made possible through the PDP platform. The statement further criticized Kwankwaso for focusing on personal ambitions rather than addressing the severe economic hardships faced by Nigerians under the current APC administration.
“The PDP believes that Senator Kwankwaso’s current political pursuits are driven by self-interest rather than genuine concern for the nation’s welfare. His political relevance, if any, was achieved while he was with the PDP,” the statement concluded.
