Nwokoro Nnamdi China, the KOWA Party’s candidate for the chairmanship of Isiala Mbano Local Government Council in the upcoming September 21 elections, has outlined his vision and reasons for seeking the role. As Coordinator of the Coalition of Local Government Aspirants Initiative of Nigeria (COLGAIN) for the South East Zone, Nwokoro shared his perspectives on recent developments and his plans if elected.
The recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments has been hailed as a significant step forward for grassroots governance. Nwokoro praised the ruling, stating, “The judgment is a liberation for grassroots governance, ensuring that local councils will receive allocations directly and be more accountable to their constituents.”
Nwokoro expressed confidence in the upcoming local government elections under Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration. He dismissed concerns that the governor’s preferences might skew the elections, emphasizing that Uzodimma is committed to transparency. “Governor Uzodimma believes in fair play and will allow the people to choose their leaders,” Nwokoro asserted.
Despite competition from candidates of larger parties, Nwokoro is optimistic about his chances. He highlighted his previous experience as a councilor and his active role in addressing local challenges. “My desire to serve Isiala Mbano stems from my past achievements and the support I’ve garnered from the community. I am driven by a sense of purpose and the need to address local issues effectively,” he said.
Nwokoro also commented on the proposed bill for a Local Government Independent Electoral Commission, which aims to further decentralize power. He views it as a positive development, noting that if enacted, it would enhance the autonomy and functionality of local governments. “The bill represents a critical step towards empowering local councils, and if elected, I will ensure the effective use of allocated funds to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure in Isiala Mbano.”
As the Coordinator of COLGAIN, Nwokoro has worked to ensure fair and transparent elections at the local level. He praised the efforts of Charles Ejiogu, Chairman of Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), and Chike Olemgbe, Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, for their roles in promoting fair elections.
